Itinerary

Day 1

Drive from Tbilisi to the mountain village of Roshka and then into the untouched Arkhoti Valley. The new serpentine road is well paved and the last stretch takes barely more than an hour. It goes over the Arkhoti Pass and along the Assa River to the village of Achieli “where the mountain goats graze”. The village has one of the few remaining defense towers.

In the afternoon, walk further along the Assa River to the last village, Amgha . This very old village is particularly authentic and primitive. Due to the poor connection, most of the families moved away in the 1990s. The houses remained uninhabited for decades and are largely dilapidated. However, there are still around twenty historical buildings, six of which are already listed. Nowadays, young people in particular are moving back to the villages of their ancestors. The families spend the summer here, restore the remaining buildings and make a fresh start.

Day 2

Hike from Archoti to the mountain village of Juta in the Kazbegi region. The route goes over high mountain meadows along steep gorges. Streams and waterfalls murmur and the steeper the climb, the more the landscape changes, until the vegetation limit is exceeded and only slate rubble and quartz boulders remain to be crossed. After about three hours you reach the Zelt Pass at 3,200m , a highlight is the magnificent view and special endemic flowers that thrive at this altitude. One of the bird migration routes leads directly over this valley. Depending on the time of year, it is therefore possible to observe a large number of vultures and other birds of prey. Picnic on the pass and leisurely descent. Again you go through a spectacular rocky landscape and further down the variety of flowers again. The last section leads along the river , which has to be crossed in a flat area . From here it is not far to the passport control (nature reserve) at Dschuta (2,200 m), where the vehicle is already waiting.

In the evening return to Tbilisi.
