Tbilisi
This tour includes several hikes on unpaved paths and leads to heights of up to 3000. The weather in the mountains is changeable and difficult to predict. Sturdy, ankle-high shoes with a profile, comfortable trekking pants and a windproof rain jacket are required.
Drive from Tbilisi into the Lesser Caucasus to the Goderdzi Pass, which forms the border between the regions of Samtskhe-Javakheti and Adjara. On the way, you have the opportunity to visit the Green Monastery near Borjomi .
The hike begins at the Green Lake , just below the Goderdzi Pass, and leads through several Adjara mountain settlements that are still traditionally farmed in the summer. The destination is the authentic mountain village of Gora . Overnight stay in the village of Gora either with a family (very simple above the cowshed) or in a tent.
Climb from Gora following the cow paths to the highest point of the mountain range and then always along the ridge to the mountain resort of Bakhmaro at 1,900m. Today’s stage leads far away from paved roads over the Meskhetian Mountains and always runs along the border between Adjara and Guria. A long steep climb and a long descent at the end are required before the last part of the tour takes you relaxed down through the deep green coniferous forest to Bakhmaro. Overnight in Bakhmaro.
In the morning, time to recover from the strenuous days of the past. Visit the notorious annual horse festival in Bachmaro , where the locals have a wild race through the mountain village. In the late afternoon, depending on time and desire, you can climb up to the nearby Sunset Mountain , from where, depending on the weather, you can enjoy a magnificent play of colors above the clouds or, if the weather is clear, a view of the Black Sea. Bakhmaro is a popular winter sports and health resort in Guria. In summer, the place is mainly visited by families. Hike from Bachmaro over a pass the settlement of Meria Keli , which already belongs to Adjara. The hike is quite demanding, it goes about 700 m up over the pass and 500 m directly down. If you have enough time and energy, you can also climb the nearby mountain Sakornia 2,755m (about 2 hours).
The destination is the cozy and extremely comfortably equipped mountain hut at 2,400 m , which serves as a base station for free riders in winter. The highlight of the tour is the spectacular view of the mountain ranges of the Lesser Caucasus in the changing colors of the setting sun.
Overnight stay in Meria Keli.
Today’s section of the route is relatively relaxed. It begins with a slight climb up to 2,600 m, past the settlement and then goes without any further climbs for about 15 kilometers, mostly slightly downhill along a dirt road over the ridge that marks the border between Guria and Adjara. On the way you pass the small Chinchao Lake , from where you can see the first houses of the mountain resort of Gomismta. If the weather is good, the entire hike offers a beautiful view of the 5,000-meter peaks of the Greater Caucasus and, at the end of the tour, of the Black Sea. Pick up in Gomistmta and transfer to either Guria, Kutaisi or Tbilisi.
