Tbilisi
This tour includes several hikes on unpaved paths and leads to heights of up to 3000. The weather in the mountains is changeable and difficult to predict. Sturdy, ankle-high shoes with a profile, comfortable trekking pants and a windproof rain jacket are required.
Day 1 starts with a fairly relaxed 500 metre climb to a viewpoint looking towards Tetnuldi mountain, with Ushba prominent behind. The route then descends to the valley floor, passing through villages and ending up at Zhabeshi. The quality of guesthouses in Zhabeshi is generally good. (If you take a higher trail, leading to a wonderful viewpoint of Lakhiri village and its numerous towers, before descending to the river. The high trail route branches off to the left about 250 metres after starting the descent. It undulates around the hillside for about 3.5 km, before leading you straight through the fields to Lakhiri.The view just before the village, with Tetnuldi rising in the background, is one of the best village scenes on the trek.)
Day 2 is the shortest in terms of distance, but involves the biggest climb of the Mestia to Ushguli trek. Before noon, steep climb towards the Tetnuldi resort. Then, a walk through the alpine pastures will take you to the Adishi village, hidden at the bottom of Adischala valley.
Day 3 is the undoubted highlight of the Mestia to Ushguli trek. You get up close to the magnificent Adishi glacier and spend almost the entire day on trail surrounded by mountains. It’s the longest day in terms of both distance and time, but the ascent to Chkhunderi Pass involves much less of a climb than the day before. Day 4, the final section on the Mestia to Ushguli trek, can be a very different experience depending on the route you choose to take. Today, we will be joined one more guide and our group splits into two – it will be up to you which route you would like to take. If you are up for a challenge, you will cross Khaldechala river and climb Lagem pass. From here, you will enjoy great views of Mt. Shkhara, the highest Georgian mountain. Then you will descend to the Inguri valley and reach Ushguli.
If you want to take it easy, you can also follow the classic route to Ushguli which follows the Enguri river. Both groups will rejoin in the afternoon at Ushguli, where you will explore the village. Return to Mestia.
