Notice

This tour includes several hikes on unpaved paths and leads to heights of up to 3000. The weather in the mountains is changeable and difficult to predict. Sturdy, ankle-high shoes with a profile, comfortable trekking pants and a windproof rain jacket are required.

Multi-day hike to the Black Rock Lake on the border with Dagestan. Lagodekhi National Park, founded in 1912, extends from 300 to 3,000 m in altitude, encompasses several climate zones and is home to numerous lakes on its high plateau – relics from the Ice Age.

Itinerary

Day 1

Drive from Tbilisi to the town of Lagodekhi. Check-in at the hotel and registration at the National Park administration. In the afternoon, hike as an introductory tour to the Ninos’chevi waterfall.

Overnight stay in Lagodechi

Day 2

Start of the trek. Hike into the forest to the river and climb (15 km, 6 hours) to the Meteo Station at about 2,000 m. The route leads ever higher into the untouched deciduous forest with linden, oak, maple, chestnut and beech trees.

stay in a tent at the Meteo Station

Day 3

The hike starts at the Meteo Station and leads over the Dark Gorge and the Koshalo Ridge. After about 1 hour you reach the tree line and enter the Alpine zone. The landscape becomes increasingly magnificent and rich in flowers, butterflies and mountain birds.

The destination of today’s tour is the border station at around 2,800 m. After an uncomplicated passport control, we set up the tent and have time to relax and discover the mountain flora and fauna.

Overnight in tent near border control.

Day 4

Climb for about 1 hour to a small pass at 3,000m, from where you have a great view of the wide highlands and three special lakes, which are lined up like a colorful chain at slightly different heights. Directly behind them is the last mountain ridge, behind which is the Black Rock Lake. Descent and past the lowest of the three lakes, the so-called Island Lake, which gets its name from the small grass islands that run through the lake.

The landscape that we are now crossing is a vast raised bog, with small, shallow pools of water everywhere that mysteriously steam away as soon as it gets cooler in the evening. The Black Rock Lake – a relic from the Ice Age – is at an altitude of 2,780 meters. It is flanked on the left and right by 3,000-meter-high peaks, and the mountains open up in front of us, offering a view of the Russian Republic of Dagestan. In the late afternoon we descend to Demidov’s shelter at 2,650 meters.

Overnight in tent at Demidov’s hut

Day 5

After a relaxed breakfast, we head back to Lagodechi via Kudigori Mountain. This first part of the tour is the highlight of the entire tour and one of the most beautiful routes in Georgia. It takes about 1.5 hours down the mountain ridge in wide serpentines. With almost every step, the landscape changes completely and offers new spectacular views after every bend: the steep gorges, the lush flower meadows, then the densely forested Caucasus foothills and behind them – as if painted – the endless expanse of the Alasani Plain.

For the final descent back into the valley you have to gather all your strength, because there is still about 1,500 meters of descent down through the forest. The path is a dirt track and in places quite steep. Hiking poles and shoes with a good profile are essential.

Relaxation in the hotel, opportunity to relax in the pool and dinner together.

Day 6

In the morning, a relaxed breakfast and another opportunity to enjoy.

Around midday, drive along the Kakhetian wine route to the family winery , where the winemaker cultivates old Kakhetian grape varieties using biodynamic methods and produces excellent wines using traditional methods in Qvevri. Return to Tbilisi in the late afternoon.
